TOWN CLERK*

An official in municipal administration whose duties included those of scribe or secretary. He published the decrees of the civic authority but also acted as a liaison officer between the administration of a city and the Roman provincial government. In Ephesus he was held responsible for the riotous assembly in Paul’s day (Acts 19:35) and had the power to impose a severe penalty. Fortunately, he was able to calm the assembly.
